Take-Home Pay in Every State, 2026

We ran the same salary through federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare and each state’s 2026 income tax for all 50 states and Washington, D.C. On $75,000, a single worker keeps $61,593 in the 9 states without a wage tax and $55,860 in Oregon, a gap of $5,733 a year.

Key findings

  1. 9 states do not tax wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. Workers there keep the most at every salary we tested.
  2. Oregon takes the biggest bite at $75,000, $5,733 a year in state income tax, or 7.6% of salary. It is also the highest-taxed state at $50,000 and $100,000.
  3. The typical state with an income tax takes about $2,712 from a $75,000 salary (Arkansas sits in the middle), about $104 per biweekly paycheck.
  4. Living in New York City adds $2,472 of city tax at $75,000. A New York City resident keeps $55,667, less than a worker keeps in any of the 50 states or D.C.
  5. Living in Philadelphia adds $2,801 of city tax at $75,000. A Philadelphia resident keeps $56,489, which would rank 51 of 52 if the city were a state.
